The Mets got their first shut out of the season, beating the Nationals 3-0. These two teams are now tied for last place. Things are lookin' up.
- Jon Niese went seven very strong innings, giving up just six hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Niese retired 12 batters in a row after giving up a lead-off double in the second. After getting off to a rough start this season, Niese has been very consistent as of late.
- Jason Bay got the Mets on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to bring home Jose Reyes.
- Justin Turner had yet, another, big hit. In the sixth inning, the Nationals walked Reyes to pitch to Turner. Turner hit a two-run double to score Scott Hairston and Reyes. Let this be a lesson: don't pitch around somebody right now to get to Turner. Turner continues to come up with big at the plate in important situations.
- Nick Evans lives! He pinch hit in the eighth inning, drawing a walk.
- Francisco Rodriguez gave up a hit to the first batter he faced, but went on to record his 13th save of the season.
- Technically the Nationals lost this game, but the real losers are the Citi Field grounds crew. They show up early to get the field ready for play. The field slowly but surely gets destroyed by a monsoon, and then they have to stay late tonight to get it ready for tomorrow's game. These guys better get paid some over time after what they've had to work with the past few days.
Next up: The Mets conclude their series with the Nationals, Thursday at 1:10 p.m. Dillon Gee gets the start.
