Interleague Play Has Lost Its Luster

With the Mets and Yankees battling it out this weekend in the 15th Subway Series, I got to thinking...Interleague Play has run its course.

It was great when first introduced in 1997, and still has its moments when rivals such as Mets and Yankees get together, but overall, it needs to end.

Pro-Interleague Play folks will argue that it's great for the fans. People get to see teams and players that they wouldn't ordinarily get to.

My argument: If you want to play an American League team so bad, you better make it to the World Series then.

It wasn't so bad when National League teams were playing American League teams from at least the same side of the country. Now teams are going cross-country to face teams that it just doesn't make sense to face.

Certain match ups are acceptable. For example, Mets vs. Yankees and White Sox vs. Cubs. These are true rivalries. It makes sense that these teams would face each other.

This season, however, the Mets will also be facing the Angels, Athletics, Rangers, and Tigers in Interleague Play.

We all know, nothing says rivalry quite like a Mets and Tigers game.
